Ecology of Yaeyama fireflies

The Yaeyama fireflies that appear on Ishigaki Island at this time of year emit countless tiny flashes of light, creating a magical scene often likened to Christmas illuminations glowing softly in the dark forest.

Among them, the Yaeyama Hime firefly is known as the smallest firefly in Japan, with a body length of only a few millimeters. Despite its tiny size, the males put on an impressive display, flying through the forest while glowing brightly to perform their courtship dance.

The females, which are wingless and cannot fly, watch from the ground. As larvae, these fireflies feed on land shellfish such as snails, but as adults they survive only on water. Their adult lifespan is very short—about one week—making this luminous spectacle all the more precious.
